An analysis of a potential ban of TikTok

The Diplomatic Pouch, the online magazine for the Institute of the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University, has published my latest article, “TikTok is a Threat. It Shouldn’t be Banned.”

Although the Chinese Communist Party could utilize TikTok in an information warfare campaign against Taiwan and its potential allies, the United States should not ban the platform.

The following is a short summary of why TikTok is a threat to the U.S. and why it shouldn’t be banned:

Hypothetical Scenario: Xi Jinping’s Plans

  • In 2029, Xi Jinping and his advisors plan to “reunify” Taiwan with China within a year.
  • China prepares for war by setting up hospitals, stockpiling food, and reinforcing military assets in its eastern and southern theaters.
